Senior Melissa Goldman, daughter of Caroline Adkins of Paxton, was named PBL’s Student of the Month for January. Nominating teacher Tim Hess described her as “instrumental to the success of PBL’s band program.”
Hess nominated Melissa because of her first-place win at the Ford County Fair Talent Show and subsequent appearance on Channel 3’s CI Living. Interestingly, her performance was a vocal solo, not an instrumental one. Melissa began her musical career as a percussionist. Currently she plays trumpet in jazz band and French horn in concert band. She is also active in marching band, pep band, chorus, show choir, and madrigals, as well as volunteering for other performance opportunities.
Under Hess’ direction, Melissa is taking a self-guided music theory class. She reinforces what she learns by teaching theory lessons to the junior high students. According to Hess, she is “an inspiration to her fellow students.”
Besides her many music activities, Melissa is active in Scholastic Bowl, Art League, and Speech.
Outside of school, she is a nursery assistant at Grace Lutheran Church in Champaign and a substitute dishwasher at the Humble Hog.
Melissa plans to study musical theater at Millikin University .
